Tumbulgum Australia Day 2017

Thanks to everyone who attended Australia Day in Tumbulgum and all the helpers.

The day kicked off under an overcast sky at Brian Breckenridge Sports field with a free breakfast featuring traditional bacon, eggs, and snags as well as Aussie Burgers and watermelon.

While savouring these treats, attendees (particularly the children) participated in various activities, including Swagman building and whip-cracking.

Entries and prize winners from the Tumbulgum Public School Australia Day Art Competition were also on display.

Acapela group “Voice Weavers” enthralled with their melodies and led the singing of the National Anthem.

The Tweed Council Mayor, Katie Milne, Member for Tweed  Geoff Provest and Tweed Shire Australia Day Ambassador Iain Finlay (notably a local North Tumbulgum resident) together with TCA President Jenny Kidd led formal proceedings.

After inspiring speeches from the dignitaries, Iain presented the local Tumbulgum Australia Day awards to:

  • Tumbulgum 2017 Citizen Achievement Award – Trish Budd;
  • Tumbulgum 2017 Junior Sports Person –  Summer Wise;
  • Tumbulgum 2017 Junior Citizen Award – Tahlia Williams ;
  • Tumbulgum 2017 Sports Person – Nathan “Gus” Glen;
  • Tumbulgum 2017 Citizen Award – Gwen Dutton.

Morning tea, featuring lamingtons and other favourite cakes and slices, was also well received after formalities were completed, leading into the feature cricket match, which was very exciting – the players (and spectators) had great fun.

A big thank you to the two captains Paul and Tizzy for recruiting full teams for the Tumbulgum VS North Tumbulgum Cricket Challenge – the trophy is back with the Village People this year! $656 was also raised through donations for the McGrath Foundation.  A full report on the cricket match can be found here.

Many thanks to our sponsors and donors who helped make the day such a success, including Tweed Shire Council, Tumbulgum Tavern, Judy Emzin Bookkeeping, the Tumbulgum Rangers Sports Club for the use of their facilities and Tumbulgum Community Association.

A montage of images captured during the day may be found here.

PS – Congrats to the Tumbulgum 150 Years organising committee, awarded Tweed Community Event of the Year Award 2016 at the Tweed Council Australia Day event. All on the committee worked hard to make it a great success and a lot of fun!
